Definition of Color-Blocked Garment

Color blocked garment is a design concept that combines at least two different colors in the same garment. These colors are generally contrasting colors with one being of dark/medium shade and the other a light shade. There should be no color transfer or cross staining from the dark to the light shade, particularly onto white or off-white shades.

High risk color-blocked products include but are not limited to: color blocked garments; garments with contrast trims, patchworks, and appliqué; contrast-striped fabrics; prints in contrast color; and other items with contrast multi-color components. As for example, white drawstring of a navy trouser is a color blocked component.

Meaning of Color-Blocked Garment

A color blocked garment is made of two minimum components contrast to each other. As for example, a maroon-colored polo shirt having white stripe in the middle of the collar. The contrast components may be made from the same or different types of fabrics but with different shades. The dyeing process may be same or different depending on the fibre composition.

Color blocking can be found in various types of clothing items such as dresses, tops, skirts, pants, and even outerwear.

The common conditions to be a color blocked garments are as follows:

  • Garments having multi contrast components. 
  • Garment made with all over printed or, yarn dyed fabric having major dark to medium color portions.
  • Garments having print in white or light color base. The light base color should be more than 50% of the whole garment.
  • Garments having contrast color printed logo/label shown on exposed side of the garment.
  • Garments having contrast color tagless/heat transfer/printed label (size, logo) printed inside of the garment (e.g. inner neck, center back waist).
  • Garment with light color PU component attached with another high contrast color component.
  • Garments having paper hang tags (such as price tag, special claim hang tag etc.).

Some common examples of color blocked garments:

  • Dark to medium color shell with white color lining.
  • Light color logo print on dark color shell.
  • Dark color body with white paper hang tag or price tag.
  • Light color neck piping contrasted with dark body.
  • Contrast print exposed on garment.

Some exemptions of color blocked garment parts like sewn-in labels (care, jocker, main labels) sewn inside the garment.
