How to Use the Garment Carton CBM Calculator

This tool is simple. You get your answer in seconds. Follow these steps:

  1. Enter the carton length, width and height.
  2. Choose the unit from each dropdown. You can mix units if needed.
  3. Type the total number of cartons.
  4. Add the gross weight of one carton.
  5. Click Calculate and wait for the progress bar.

The page then scrolls to your results. You will see CBM per carton, total CBM, cubic feet, total weight and container estimates. Use Copy Result to paste the numbers into an email. Use Share Result to send them to your buyer or forwarder.

Which units are supported?

Dimensions work in centimeters, millimeters, meters, inches and feet. Weight works in kilograms and pounds. This helps when buyers send specs in inches and factories measure in centimeters.

What is CBM in Garment Export Packing and Why Does It Matter?

CBM means cubic meter. It measures the space a carton takes up. One CBM is a box of 1 meter by 1 meter by 1 meter.

In garment export, every shipment is planned by volume. Apparel is light but bulky. So space often runs out before weight does. That is why CBM is the main number in freight quotes.

Why merchandisers must know it

CBM affects several decisions at once:

  • Freight cost. LCL shipments are charged per CBM.
  • Container choice. You decide between 20ft, 40ft or 40HC.
  • Booking accuracy. A wrong CBM can cause rolled cargo or extra charges.
  • Buyer documents. Packing lists and invoices must show correct volume.

A small error adds up

Say your carton is off by 2 cm in one side. Over 3,000 cartons, that gap can fill a whole extra container. Always check the numbers early.

The Formula: How to Calculate Garment Carton CBM Manually

The formula is easy. Multiply the three sides in centimeters. Then divide by one million.

CBM = (L x W x H in cm) / 1,000,000

If you use inches, multiply by 2.54 first. Or use this shortcut:

CBM = (L x W x H in inches) / 61,024

Worked example

A carton measures 60 x 40 x 35 cm.

  • 60 x 40 x 35 = 84,000 cubic cm
  • 84,000 / 1,000,000 = 0.084 CBM
  • For 500 cartons: 0.084 x 500 = 42 CBM

Useful conversions

1 CBM equals 35.31 cubic feet. And 1 cubic foot equals 0.0283 CBM. Keep these handy when a buyer asks for CFT.

Container Capacity: How Many Garment Cartons Fit into 20ft and 40ft Containers?

Containers have a nominal volume. But you cannot use all of it. Door gaps, wall space and uneven stacking reduce the room. So use the usable figure for planning.

Check weight too

Most garment cartons hit the volume limit first. But heavy items like denim can reach the weight limit. Always compare total weight with the container payload. A 20ft container usually carries about 21,000 to 28,000 kg. A 40ft carries about 26,000 to 29,000 kg.

Use the calculator above to get these numbers for your own carton size. It shows how many cartons fit and how many containers you need.

Pro Tips for Merchandisers: Optimizing Carton Sizes to Cut Shipping Costs

Small changes in packing can save a lot of money. Try these habits:

  • Design for the container. Pick a carton size that divides well into the container width and length.
  • Avoid air space. Do not use oversized cartons for small orders.
  • Fold and compress. Use poly bags with air removed and fold in a standard way.
  • Standardize sizes. Use two or three carton sizes across styles. It makes loading faster.
  • Check carton strength. Strong cartons stack higher without crushing.
  • Measure outer size. Include any bulge from the packed goods.
  • Plan early. Run the numbers before the carton order is placed.

Think in pallets and floor space

If you ship palletized cargo, work out cartons per layer first. Then count layers by height. This gives a clean stack and fewer damaged cartons.

Review every order

Compare planned CBM with actual CBM after each shipment. Over time you will find the best sizes for your products. That is how good merchandisers cut freight cost season after season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply length x width x height in centimeters. Divide by 1,000,000. The result is the CBM of one carton.

CBM is cubic meter. It is the volume of your export cartons. Freight forwarders use it to price and plan shipments.

A 40ft container holds about 67 CBM in total. Usable space is about 58 CBM. A 40ft High Cube has about 68 usable CBM.

For sea freight, 1 CBM is usually counted as 1,000 kg. For air freight, 1 CBM is counted as about 167 kg. The higher of actual or volumetric weight is charged.

CBM = (L x W x H in cm) / 1,000,000. For inches, use (L x W x H) / 61,024.
